2026 Grounds Restoration Campaign Reaches 68% โ€” 47 Headstones Restored So Far

Thanks to 128 generous donors and 85 dedicated volunteers, our largest restoration effort in a decade is transforming Section C of Turpin Cemetery. This spring alone, our monument restoration team has cleaned, repaired, and stabilized 47 weathered headstones dating from 1840 to 1920.

Among the most significant recoveries: the marker of Civil War veteran Elijah Turpin (1838โ€“1897), whose inscription had become nearly illegible after 130 years of weathering. Using gentle D/2 biological solution and professional epoxy stabilization, volunteers revealed his full name, regiment, and epitaph โ€” allowing his great-great-granddaughter to visit and read it clearly for the first time.

Spring Wildflower Planting: 1,200 Native Plants Added to Section B

In celebration of Earth Day, 45 volunteers from Irvine Baptist Church and Estill County Extension planted black-eyed Susans, coneflowers, and butterfly milkweed along the main pathway โ€” creating pollinator corridors through the oldest section of the cemetery.

Irvine Rotary Club Awards $5,000 Grant for Pathway Accessibility

We are honored to receive a $5,000 community grant from the Irvine Rotary Club to install ADA-compliant gravel pathways in Sections A and D. Work begins in June and will make 120 additional gravesites wheelchair-accessible.
