Accessibility Statement
Last Updated: June 6, 2026
1. Our Commitment to Accessibility
Turpin Cemetery Inc is committed to ensuring that our website and our physical cemetery grounds are accessible to all people, including individuals with disabilities. We believe that everyone โ regardless of ability โ should be able to access information about our mission, make donations, request burial records, sign up to volunteer, and visit the resting places of their loved ones with dignity and ease.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the Irvine, Kentucky community and families across Estill County, we recognize that accessibility is not an optional feature but a fundamental expression of our values. Just as we work to ensure that pathways through our cemetery are navigable, we work to ensure that pathways through our digital presence are equally open.
We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). WCAG 2.1 provides a shared international standard for web accessibility across four principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust (POUR). Our goal is to meet or exceed Level AA conformance across all pages of our website.
2. Accessibility Measures
Turpin Cemetery Inc has taken and continues to take the following measures to ensure accessibility of our website and services:
2.1 Website Design and Development
- Semantic HTML: We use properly structured HTML5 elements (headings, landmarks, lists, tables) to ensure content is meaningfully organized for assistive technologies such as screen readers.
- Alternative Text: All meaningful images include descriptive alt text. Decorative images are marked with empty alt attributes or aria-hidden to prevent screen reader clutter.
- Keyboard Navigation: All interactive elements โ including navigation links, buttons, form fields, FAQ accordions, and the back-to-top button โ are operable via keyboard alone. Focus indicators are visible on all focusable elements.
- Color Contrast: Text and interactive elements meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text). Our color palette has been selected to maintain readability in both light and dark modes.
- Dark Mode: We offer a dark mode toggle to reduce eye strain and accommodate users with light sensitivity or photophobia. The preference is saved in local storage and persists across visits.
- Responsive Design: Our Site is designed mobile-first and adapts to all screen sizes, orientations, and zoom levels up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.
- ARIA Labels and Roles: We use ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes where native HTML semantics are insufficient โ including aria-label on icon buttons, aria-expanded on FAQ accordions, role="navigation" on menus, and aria-hidden on decorative elements.
- Form Accessibility: All form fields are associated with visible labels, required fields are indicated, and error messages are descriptive. Form elements support browser autofill attributes.
- Skip Navigation: We provide mechanisms to bypass repetitive navigation content and jump directly to main content areas.
- Readable Typography: We use Nunito and Playfair Display fonts at sizes that scale with user preferences. Line height and paragraph spacing are set for comfortable reading.
- Motion and Animation: Fade-in animations are subtle and do not convey essential information. Users who prefer reduced motion can rely on browser-level prefers-reduced-motion settings, which we respect through CSS media queries where implemented.
2.2 Physical Accessibility
- Main cemetery entrance pathways are graded for wheelchair and walker access.
- Accessible parking is available near the primary gate.
- Assisted visits and motorized cart escorts are available by advance arrangement for individuals with mobility challenges.
- Guided tours are conducted at a pace accommodating participants with varying mobility levels.
- Memorial event venues are selected with accessibility considerations, and accommodations are noted in event announcements.
3. Known Limitations
Despite our best efforts, some areas of our website and physical grounds may not yet be fully accessible. We are aware of the following limitations and are actively working to address them:
- Embedded Google Maps: The map on our Contact page is provided by Google Maps and may not be fully accessible to screen reader users. We provide the full mailing address (PO BOX 688, Irvine, KY 40336) in text as an alternative.
- Third-Party Payment Forms: Our donation checkout is processed through third-party payment providers (such as Stripe or PayPal). While these providers maintain their own accessibility standards, we cannot fully control the accessibility of their embedded forms. If you experience difficulty making an online donation, please contact us to donate by mail or phone.
- PDF Documents: Some downloadable documents, such as annual reports and historical archive materials, may not be fully accessible to screen readers. We are working to provide accessible HTML or tagged PDF alternatives for all public documents.
- Older Cemetery Sections: Some historic sections of the cemetery grounds have uneven terrain, narrow paths, and limited paved access due to the age and topography of the land. We are gradually improving accessibility in these areas through our grounds preservation program.
- Social Media Content: Content posted on third-party social media platforms may not always meet our accessibility standards. We strive to include alt text on images and captions on videos across all platforms.
- Multi-Language Support: Our website is currently available in English only. Multi-language support is planned for a future update.
We welcome your feedback on any accessibility barriers you encounter so we can prioritize improvements.
4. Assistive Technology Compatibility
Our website is designed to be compatible with the following assistive technologies and browser combinations:
- Screen Readers: NVDA (Windows), JAWS (Windows), VoiceOver (macOS and iOS), and TalkBack (Android) on the two most recent major versions of supported browsers.
- Screen Magnification: Browser zoom up to 200% and dedicated magnification software such as ZoomText.
- Voice Recognition: Dragon NaturallySpeaking and browser-native voice control on supported platforms.
- Keyboard-Only Navigation: Full site functionality without a mouse or pointing device.
- Browser Support: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Microsoft Edge on the two most recent major versions.
We test our Site periodically using automated accessibility scanning tools and manual testing with screen readers. However, the wide variety of assistive technologies and browser configurations means that individual experiences may vary. If you encounter a compatibility issue, please let us know the assistive technology, browser, and operating system you are using so we can investigate and resolve the problem.
5. Feedback and Assistance

7. Continuous Improvement
Accessibility is an ongoing commitment, not a one-time achievement. Turpin Cemetery Inc pursues continuous improvement through the following practices:
- Regular Audits: We conduct periodic accessibility audits of our website using automated tools (such as WAVE, axe, and Lighthouse) and manual testing with assistive technologies.
- Staff and Volunteer Training: Board members, staff, and volunteers who create web content or interact with the public receive training on accessibility best practices.
- Accessibility in Procurement: When selecting third-party tools, payment processors, email platforms, and other services, we evaluate accessibility as a criterion in our decision-making process.
- User Feedback Integration: Accessibility feedback from visitors is reviewed by our board and incorporated into our improvement roadmap.
- Physical Grounds Improvements: Our grounds preservation program includes an accessibility improvement plan, with annual goals for pathway grading, signage, seating, and accessible parking.
- Policy Updates: This Accessibility Statement is reviewed and updated at least annually, or sooner when significant changes are made to our website or services.
We are grateful to the disability community, accessibility advocates, and all visitors who provide feedback that helps us serve everyone more effectively. Together, we ensure that Turpin Cemetery Inc remains a place where all people can honor their loved ones and participate in our mission without barriers.
