About Turpin Cemetery Inc

For generations, we have been stewards of sacred ground in Estill County โ€” preserving history, honoring lives, and serving families with compassion and transparency.

Our Story

Rooted in Irvine, Kentucky

The Turpin family cemetery began in the mid-1800s as a small burial ground on rolling Kentucky hillside โ€” a quiet place where pioneers, farmers, veterans, and children of Estill County were laid to rest near the land they loved. For decades, care fell to family members and neighbors who mowed grass, cleared brush, and remembered the names on weathered stones.

By the early 2000s, the cemetery faced the same challenges as many historic burial grounds across rural America: aging monuments, overgrown pathways, incomplete records, and limited resources for ongoing maintenance. Families who wished to visit their ancestors often found impassable paths and unreadable headstones. The stories etched in stone risked being lost forever.

In response, community leaders, historians, and descendants came together to form Turpin Cemetery Inc โ€” a federally recognized 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization (EIN: 81-5231382). Our mission was clear: transform passive neglect into active stewardship, ensuring that every grave receives dignified care and every family retains access to their heritage.

Today, we manage more than 150 acres of sacred ground, coordinate hundreds of volunteers, restore historic monuments, digitize burial records dating to the 1800s, and host memorial gatherings that bring our community together. We operate from PO Box 688, Irvine, KY 40336, and welcome inquiries at info@turpincemeteryinc.org.

What Guides Us

Mission, Vision & Values

Every decision we make โ€” from restoring a single headstone to planning a community memorial โ€” is grounded in these principles.

Our Mission

To preserve and maintain the Turpin Cemetery as a sacred, accessible, and beautiful resting place; to honor the lives of those interred here; and to serve grieving families and the broader Irvine community with compassion, dignity, and transparency.

Our Vision

A future where every family in Estill County can visit their ancestors on well-kept grounds, where historic headstones stand restored and readable, and where cemetery stewardship is recognized as essential community service โ€” funded sustainably and carried forward by generations to come.

Our Values

Dignity for every life remembered. Stewardship of land and history. Transparency in all financial matters. Community as our foundation. Compassion for families in grief. Heritage preserved for future researchers and descendants.

Our History

A Timeline of Stewardship

From a family burial ground to a thriving 501(c)(3) โ€” key milestones in our journey.

1800s

Early Burials & Family Grounds

The Turpin family and neighboring settlers establish a small burial ground on hillside land in what is now Estill County. Early headstones mark the resting places of pioneers, Civil War veterans, and generations of Kentucky families.

1892

Formal Cemetery Layout

Community leaders survey and expand the cemetery boundaries. A hand-drawn plat map records section divisions, family plots, and the location of the oldest known graves โ€” documents we still reference in our heritage archive today.

1920sโ€“1940s

Growth Through Two World Wars

As Irvine grows, so does the cemetery. World War I and II veterans are interred with honor. Local churches and civic groups hold annual decoration days, planting flowers and maintaining pathways through volunteer effort alone.

1970s

Records & Preservation Challenges

Decades of paper burial records begin to deteriorate. Several historic monuments suffer storm damage. Community members express concern that without organized stewardship, the cemetery's history could be lost.

2008

Community Restoration Effort Begins

Descendants and Irvine residents launch the first organized cleanup days โ€” clearing overgrown sections, repairing fences, and cataloguing damaged headstones. The effort reveals the scale of need and sparks conversations about formal nonprofit status.

2015

Turpin Cemetery Inc Founded

Community leaders file articles of incorporation and apply for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. A volunteer board of directors is elected. Initial fundraising campaigns support pathway gravel, tree trimming, and the first professional monument cleanings.

2017

501(c)(3) Status Granted

The IRS recognizes Turpin Cemetery Inc as a tax-exempt public charity (EIN: 81-5231382). Donations become tax-deductible, enabling sustained fundraising and partnerships with foundations, churches, and civic organizations.

2019

Heritage Archive Program Launches

Volunteers and historians begin digitizing burial records, photographing headstones, and creating a searchable database for genealogists and family researchers. Over 2,000 records are catalogued in the first year.

2022

Monument Restoration Fund

A dedicated restoration program hires trained conservators to repair cracked, tilted, and illegible headstones using industry-standard preservation techniques. More than 85 monuments are restored in the first campaign cycle.

2024

Community Gardens & Grief Support

Native wildflower gardens are planted across 12 acres. Partnerships with licensed grief counselors provide referral resources for families. Annual memorial services draw record attendance from across Estill County.

2026

Grounds Restoration Campaign

Our current $50,000 campaign funds pathway repair, storm-damaged monument work, and native landscaping across 40 acres. With 320+ active volunteers and $185K raised since founding, we enter our second decade stronger than ever.
